Five Defeats in Eight Games Leave Enyimba Facing Early NPFL Survival Battle

Nine-time Nigerian champions Enyimba are facing mounting pressure in the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League after suffering their fifth defeat in eight matches, leaving the Aba giants struggling near the relegation zone.

Their latest setback came in a 4–2 defeat to Katsina United at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, where defensive mistakes and an unsuccessful comeback exposed the challenges confronting Emmanuel Deutsch’s side.

Enyimba’s troubles began just six minutes into the encounter when goalkeeper Dede Dare allowed Emeka Onyema’s back pass to slip through his legs and into the net.

The mistake handed Katsina an early advantage before Mubarak Sani doubled the hosts’ lead in the 12th minute.

Although Enyimba created opportunities through Ifeanyi Ihemekwele, Richard Ezinwa and Chidera Michael, they entered half-time trailing by two goals.

Their situation worsened when Luis Dadong headed home Katsina’s third goal on the hour mark.

However, Deutsch’s substitutions briefly revived the visitors.

Chidera Michael reduced the deficit in the 67th minute before substitute Charles Egbe scored again, bringing Enyimba within one goal of completing an unlikely comeback.

With the score at 3–2, the visitors pushed forward in search of an equaliser.

But their attacking ambition left spaces at the back, allowing Umar Rabiu to score Katsina’s fourth goal in the 80th minute.

The defeat left Enyimba with just seven points from eight matches, a concerning return for a club accustomed to competing for domestic honours.

Their five losses also underline the inconsistency that has characterised their opening fixtures.

While Enyimba have demonstrated the ability to score goals, conceding four against Katsina raises further questions about their defensive organisation.

The result is particularly worrying because the club had entered the encounter following a 2–0 victory over Plateau United.

Rather than building momentum from that win, Enyimba suffered another setback.

Their next league assignment against Warri Wolves on October 18 now presents an opportunity to respond.

For Deutsch and his players, the immediate priority is turning occasional encouraging performances into consistent results.

With the campaign still in its early stages, Enyimba have time to recover.

However, five defeats in eight matches have already transformed their season from a potential title challenge into an early fight to escape the bottom four.
