Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has criticised Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision to publicly express his grievances over developments within the Portuguese national team, describing the controversy as unnecessary and warning that it has placed the country’s football authorities and players in a difficult position.
Troost-Ekong, who faced Ronaldo during his playing career, admitted he was surprised by the statement, particularly considering the Portuguese superstar’s achievements and influence throughout his international career.
“I was somewhat surprised seeing the statement. I think it’s a very ugly way to maybe end this chapter. I know that he still left the door open, but I think if you have done so much for Portugal, there comes a moment where you can maybe read the room,” Troost-Ekong said.
The former Nigeria defender believes the situation has created an unnecessary dilemma for Portugal, with the football authorities now facing difficult questions over the coach’s position and Ronaldo’s possible return.
“If Jesus has made a mistake here, I think he’s put Portugal now in a very difficult position. If I was one of his teammates, I’m not sure I would have liked to see this,” he explained.
Troost-Ekong also expressed disappointment that a player widely respected for allowing his performances to speak for him had chosen to make such a sensitive disagreement public.
“As a fan of Cristiano Ronaldo, someone that I’ve played against in different moments of his fantastic career, I wasn’t expecting this to be some part of his story,” he stated.
He argued that the controversy could overshadow Ronaldo’s remarkable achievements and potentially create divisions within the national team at a crucial period.
“It’s a shame, in my opinion, because I think this is a conversation that could have been kept behind closed doors,” Troost-Ekong added.
The former Super Eagles captain maintained that Ronaldo’s contributions to Portuguese football remain unquestionable but insisted that the manner and timing of the statement were disappointing.
For Troost-Ekong, Ronaldo’s extraordinary legacy deserves recognition, but the public dispute risks distracting from his achievements and creating problems that could have been avoided through private discussions.
