Super Eagles midfielder Stephen Michael has described his first appearance for Nigeria as a proud career moment after being handed a starting role in the dramatic 3-3 international friendly draw against Russia in Nizhny Novgorod.
The 19-year-old Vendsyssel FF midfielder was one of several newcomers trusted by head coach Eric Chelle from the opening whistle as Nigeria fielded an experimental side against the Russians.
For Michael, getting the opportunity to start on his senior international debut made the occasion even more memorable.
“It was a nice opportunity for me to start the game and show what I can do,” Michael said. “I’m proud to represent Nigeria.”
The youngster also expressed hope that his first taste of Super Eagles football will be the beginning rather than the end of his journey, with the midfielder targeting further invitations as Chelle continues to broaden competition within his squad.
Michael played the opening 45 minutes before being replaced by Abdullahi Umar at half-time as Chelle altered his approach with Nigeria trailing 2-1.
Nigeria had taken a 10th-minute lead through Kelechi Iheanacho before Russia turned the game around through Lechi Sadulaev and Matvey Kislyak. Aleksey Miranchuk made it 3-1 nine minutes after the restart, but Peter Edokpolor pulled one back before Akor Adams completed a remarkable comeback in stoppage time.
Michael’s invitation represented a significant step in his development. The Denmark-based midfielder was among the fresh faces specifically selected by Chelle for the Russia assignment, having established himself at Vendsyssel.
Facing a Russian side that enjoyed more than 60 percent possession also provided a demanding introduction to senior international football, with Michael frequently needed to operate under sustained midfield pressure.
For the youngster, however, the biggest takeaway was finally wearing Nigeria’s colours at senior level.
After progressing through club football in Denmark, Michael can now call himself a Super Eagles international — and his next challenge is ensuring that his first 45 minutes in green and white earn him many more.
