Ghana Strikes on Nigerian Soil: UDS Stuns ABUAD in Six-Goal WAUG Clash

Nigeria may be hosting the 2026 West African University Games, but Ghana’s University of Development Studies has delivered an early reminder that home advantage will not guarantee success in the football competition.

UDS defeated Nigeria’s Afe Babalola University 4-2 as action continued at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

The six-goal encounter provided one of the notable results from the early stages of the Games, with the Ghanaian university collecting an important victory against Nigerian opposition.

For ABUAD, conceding four goals also leaves an immediate defensive question as the competition progresses.

University football tournaments often leave little time for teams to recover from poor results, making the ability to respond quickly particularly important.

The defeat therefore places pressure on the Nigerian side to improve in its subsequent fixtures if it hopes to remain competitive.

For UDS, however, scoring four times against a host country team represents an encouraging start.

The result also underlines the international challenge facing Nigerian universities during the Games.

Unlike domestic university competitions where teams face familiar opponents, WAUG brings together institutions from different countries, playing styles and sporting systems across West Africa.

That provides Nigerian student athletes with an opportunity to measure themselves against competitors from outside the country.

The 15th West African University Games began at OAU on October 2 and will continue until October 12.

Seventeen sports are included in the programme, ranging from football and athletics to basketball, swimming, judo, tennis and table tennis.

But football has already produced an early cross border statement.

Nigeria has the advantage of hosting the competition.

UDS has now shown that the teams arriving from elsewhere in West Africa have no intention of simply making up the numbers.

For ABUAD, the response to a four goal Ghanaian warning could now become just as important as the defeat itself.
