Nigerian women’s footballers Olamide Bolaji and Joy Omewa enjoyed standout weekends with their clubs after producing five goals between them in league action abroad.
Bolaji stole the spotlight in Saudi Arabia, finding the net three times for Al-Shams in their thrilling 5-4 victory over Eastern Flames in the Saudi Women’s First Division.
The Nigerian forward was involved throughout the contest and completed her hat-trick late in the game, helping Al-Shams hold on to all three points in a match that produced nine goals.
The three-goal performance continues what has been an impressive start to Bolaji’s campaign. She has now scored five times in three appearances, giving her an early impact at her new club.
Meanwhile, Omewa was also on target in Sweden as BK Häcken cruised to a 9-0 victory over IK Uppsala in the Damallsvenskan.
The Nigerian striker needed just 17 minutes to put her name on the score sheet twice, scoring in the 10th and 17th minutes as Häcken quickly took control of the match.
It was particularly significant for Omewa as the performance came during her first home start for Häcken since joining the Swedish side. Her two goals also took her total for the club to three.
While the two players are competing in different leagues and countries, their performances provided another reminder of the growing presence of Nigerian attackers in women’s football outside the country.
Bolaji has previously established herself as a prolific scorer in the Nigeria Women’s Football League before making the move abroad, while Omewa is continuing to build her career in Sweden.
Their latest displays will also attract attention from Nigerian football followers, with both players currently showing strong goalscoring form at club level.
For Bolaji, the challenge will be to maintain her early-season momentum with Al-Shams. Omewa, meanwhile, will hope her first home start and two-goal display can lead to more opportunities as Häcken’s campaign continues.
