The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Hon. Adeyinka Anthony Adeboye, has reaffirmed the importance of community-based sporting competitions in discovering young talents and creating sustainable opportunities for Nigerian youths.
Adeboye stated this in his message to the maiden edition of the Hon. Daniel Nuhu Kwali Chairman’s Cup, held in Kwali Area Council, Abuja, where he was represented by Mr. Eniola Abiola and Mr. Debo Oyebola.
The competition brought together young football talents, football enthusiasts, community leaders and other stakeholders in a celebration of grassroots football, providing another platform for players within the area to demonstrate their abilities.
Adeboye commended the initiative, describing competitions at community and local government levels as an important foundation for a functional national sports development system.
According to him, Nigeria’s enormous sporting potential can only be fully harnessed when young people are given regular opportunities to participate in organised competitions within their communities.
“Every community competition is an opportunity to discover Nigeria’s next champion. We have talents everywhere, but talent needs a platform to be seen, developed and given a pathway to the next level,” Adeboye said.
He stressed that grassroots sports must go beyond organising tournaments, noting that promising athletes discovered through such competitions should be properly identified, monitored and connected to development programmes that can help them progress.
“For us, the important question is what happens to the talented boy or girl after the competition. We must begin to create a system where those who distinguish themselves are followed up, properly developed and given opportunities to move to higher levels,” he added.
Adeboye said the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development would continue to encourage credible initiatives that provide young Nigerians with opportunities to participate in sports.
He noted that grassroots sports also have a wider role in youth empowerment, community engagement, discipline and social development.
The Presidential aide commended Hon. Daniel Nuhu and the organisers of the Chairman’s Cup for investing in young people through football, while calling on other local government and community leaders to support sustainable sporting programmes within their areas.
He said Nigeria’s grassroots development drive requires collaboration among government, communities, schools, clubs, coaches, sports associations and the private sector.
Adeboye further explained that strengthening competitions at the community level aligns with the broader objective of creating a clearer pathway from grassroots participation to elite sports.
“Our communities are where the journey begins. The Super Eagles players we celebrate today started somewhere. Someone gave them an opportunity, someone discovered them, and someone believed in them,” he said.
“That is why we must continue creating these platforms. The next Super Eagles star could be playing today in Kwali or in another community somewhere across Nigeria.”
Adeboye congratulated the organisers, participating teams and young footballers, assuring them that his Office remains committed to supporting initiatives that make grassroots sports a genuine pathway to opportunity and national representation.
