Six young Nigerian players have been handed an opportunity to make the jump from the Falconets to the Super Falcons after earning places in the squad for the 2028 Olympic Games qualifiers against Comoros.
Goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma, defender Tumininu Adeshina, midfielder Favour Nkwocha and forward Janet Akekoromowei are among the youngsters invited after representing Nigeria at the recently concluded FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
Farida Abdulwahab and Joy Igokwe have also received senior invitations after being part of the Falconets set up.
For the six players, the call up represents more than another national team camp.
It provides an early opportunity to test themselves alongside some of the biggest names in Nigerian women’s football as the country begins another Olympic qualification journey.
The young players will share camp with established internationals including captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Asisat Oshoala, Chiamaka Nnadozie, Toni Payne and Jennifer Echegini.
Ashleigh Plumptre has also returned to the squad after missing the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations through injury.
The inclusion of the Falconets contingent could be particularly important for Nigeria as the Super Falcons continue to introduce younger players into the senior set up.
Akekoromowei is among those whose progress will attract attention after her performances at youth level and subsequent move to Benfica.
For Abdulwahab and Igokwe, the invitation also provides another international opportunity after visa problems prevented them from joining Nigeria’s squad at the U-20 World Cup in Poland.
Interim coach Augustine Eguavoen has named 28 players for the Olympic qualifying fixtures.
Nigeria will face Comoros over two legs, with both matches scheduled to take place at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo because Comoros does not have a CAF approved venue available for the fixtures.
The first match is scheduled for October 9, before the teams meet again four days later.
For Nigeria’s six young invitees, however, camp could represent the beginning of something bigger a chance to turn youth team promise into a place in the senior national side.
