Football analyst Martin Tachio has urged the Super Eagles to learn from their 3–0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in Bissau and approach the remainder of their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with greater discipline and concentration.
Speaking in an interview with Sports247, Tachio said Nigeria have the quality and tactical depth to compete for qualification but must ensure their talent is matched by the right mentality.
“The quality in this squad is undeniable, but tournaments are won in the mind just as much as on the pitch,” Tachio said.
He identified the tendency to underestimate opponents as one of the dangers facing the Super Eagles, stressing that Nigeria must approach every qualifying fixture with the same intensity.
“If the Super Eagles maintain their intensity and refuse to take any opponent for granted from the very first whistle, they will not only qualify out of the group—they will send a strong statement to the rest of the continent,” he stated.
Tachio also highlighted defensive solidity and early momentum as areas Nigeria must improve following the heavy defeat in Bissau.
He urged the team to analyse the mistakes that led to the three-goal loss and make the necessary adjustments before the next qualifier.
With the campaign still ongoing, Tachio believes the Super Eagles have sufficient quality and experience to recover, but must translate those strengths into consistent performances on the pitch.
For Nigeria, the immediate challenge is to turn the lessons from Bissau into a stronger showing in the matches ahead as they pursue qualification for AFCON 2027.
