More than 3,000 Nigerian runners are preparing for an unusual opportunity in Abeokuta this weekend a major road race where the battle for honours will be exclusively among home athletes.
The 2026 Abeokuta 10km Race is scheduled for October 3 in Ogun State, with organisers confirming that this year’s competition will be restricted to Nigerian participants.
Registration has already crossed the 3,000-runner mark, setting up a sizeable field for the 10-kilometre contest.
The indigenous only format changes the competitive picture for Nigerian road runners.
Major Nigerian Road races regularly attract elite athletes from East African countries, particularly Kenya and Ethiopia, whose runners have frequently challenged and won top positions.
Abeokuta will offer a different test.
With foreign elite runners absent, Nigerian competitors will have an opportunity to measure themselves directly against the strongest domestic opposition while competing for the leading positions.
The race will also feature male and female categories, ensuring athletes across both fields have an opportunity to contest for honours.
Beyond determining winners, the size of the entry list could provide another indication of the depth of interest in distance running within Nigeria.
The country’s international athletics reputation has traditionally been dominated by sprinters and jumpers, while Nigerian distance runners have faced a more difficult route towards comparable global prominence.
