Nigeria’s rugby team, the Stallions, will this weekend be involved in major continental action, as the senior squad battles Zimbabwe, Ghana and Morocco in Pool A of the 2026 Africa Men’s Sevens Series in Kampala, Uganda.
Sports247 reports that the competition, which doubles as Africa’s qualifier for the 2027 World Rugby SVNS 3, will be held this Saturday and Sunday, during which the Stallions need to finish among the top two teams in their group to progress into the semi-finals.
They would then have to redouble their efforts to overcome one of Zambia, Tunisia, Senegal and hosts Uganda from Pool B of the eight-team competition in order to reach the final, with the eventual winner picking Africa’s lone ticket to the 2027 SVNS 3 circuit.
Sports247 gathered further that the competition was originally scheduled as a 12-team sevens tournament in Mauritius but had to be postponed due to the Ebola outbreak, and Uganda was chosen to host an eight-team format while the main event will now be held in October.
Ahead of this weekend’s games in Uganda, the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) named a 12-man squad, saddled with the task of excelling at the major competition, which serves as qualification to the 2027 World Rugby SVNS 3 circuit and a step towards the 2028 Olympic Games.
