Golf has been included in the Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival for the first time, with the Ibom Golf Course at Ibom Hotel & Golf Resort in Uyo hosting the maiden competition today.
The event features 32 teams representing the 31 Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom State, alongside Team Nigeria, which consists of non-indigenous participants.
The competition brings together different categories of golfers, including professionals, women golfers and young players. Bankers and other members of the golfing community are also taking part.
Captain of the Ibom Golf and Country Club, Isuamfon Archibong, is leading the golfing community at the maiden event. He is also representing Uyo alongside Federal Commissioner of the Public Complaints Commission, Ubong Uwah.
Other participants listed for the competition include Dr James Inam, representing Eket; Rt. Hon. Usoro Akpanusoh for Esit Eket; and former Akwa Ibom Golf Association chairman Sam Ekpenyong for Ibeno.
A notable pairing is representing Nsit Ubium, with Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Leader Rt. Hon. Otobong Bob teaming up with former Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke.
Former Akwa Ibom Attorney General Chief Victor Iyanam is representing Urue Offong/Oruko, while former Head of Service Elder Effiong Essien and retired Permanent Secretary Elder Eno Effiong are representing Ibesikpo Asutan. Senator Albert Akpan and Dr Iniobong Essien are listed for Ibiono Ibom, while former House of Assembly member Barr. Uwem Ekanem is representing Ikot Abasi.
The golf competition is part of the 2026 Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival, which is being contested across 27 sports by athletes representing the state’s 31 Local Government Areas with about 4,000 athletes participating in the festival.
The golfers will compete for the inaugural title, with the winner set to become the first golf champion of the Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival.
