Young Nigerian athletes will have an opportunity to turn the streets of Ile-Ife into a pathway for sporting development on Thursday as the second edition of the Ife 5KM Road Race takes place during the annual Olojo Festival.
The race returns to the Osun State city today, bringing together youth runners, members of the public and professional athletes in an event designed to combine competitive athletics with talent discovery.
While cash prizes are available for winners, organizers have placed particular emphasis on what happens beyond the finish line.
Promising participants are expected to have access to mentorship from experienced athletes, giving younger runners an opportunity to gain guidance that could help their development beyond the competition itself.
That approach gives the five-kilometre event a broader purpose at a time when discovering and developing young sporting talent remains an important part of Nigeria’s athletics pathway.
The race is organised by Sooko Adeleke Odewade alongside the Alade’fa Athletic Family Initiative and forms part of activities surrounding the historic Olojo Festival.
Its route passes through notable areas of Ile-Ife, allowing athletics to share the stage with one of the country’s prominent cultural celebrations.
The inaugural edition was held in 2025 and attracted runners and sports enthusiasts, providing the foundation for this year’s return.
For young competitors, however, Thursday’s race offers more than an opportunity to record a fast time.
