Former Nigeria Football Federation board member Aisha Falode has urged the Super Falcons’ interim technical crew to accelerate the transition of outstanding Falconets players into the senior national team, arguing that Nigeria must begin building a new generation without delay.
Falode believes the impressive showing of Nigeria’s U-20 women at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland has provided sufficient evidence that several players deserve opportunities to challenge for senior-team places.
The Falconets recovered from a difficult start to reach the quarterfinals, with players including Christiana Uzoma, Janet Akekoromowei, Winner Onajite David, Ramotalahi Kareem, Rebecca Adegbemile, Tosin Rafiu and Mary Mamudu producing notable performances during the tournament.
“Now is the time to be daring,” Falode said, calling on the interim coaches to create a clearer pathway between the U-20 side and the Super Falcons.
She argued that previous senior-team coaches became too comfortable with familiar selections and were reluctant to phase out players she believes have moved beyond their peak.
Falode wants the next generation to be given genuine opportunities to compete for shirts rather than remaining in the youth system until much later in their careers.
Her call echoes Falconets coach Moses Aduku, who believes several members of his World Cup squad can eventually graduate to the senior team.
“There is going to be a transition to the senior national team from this junior side,” Aduku told FIFA during the tournament. “So they really need to apply themselves. This is just the platform.”
Falode had already warned earlier this year that Nigeria cannot rely indefinitely on its historic dominance of African women’s football, saying rival countries are investing heavily in development.
“The gap is closing. If we don’t wake up, we will become yesterday’s heroes,” she said in July.
For Falode, therefore, the Falconets’ World Cup performances should represent more than an encouraging youth tournament.
They should become the beginning of a deliberate changing of the guard in the Super Falcons.
