Former Nigeria international Sam Sodje has questioned the Super Eagles’ preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, warning that Nigerian football must learn from previous failures and embrace a more organised approach.
Sodje raised concerns over the delay surrounding the squad announcement ahead of Nigeria’s opening qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, arguing that preparations for major international matches should demonstrate greater structure and coordination.
His comments came before head coach Éric Chelle eventually released his 24-man squad on Thursday, with Nigeria scheduled to face Madagascar in Uyo on September 25 before travelling to Bissau to tackle Guinea-Bissau four days later.
For Sodje, however, the wider concern goes beyond when a list of players is published.
The former Super Eagles defender believes Nigeria must demonstrate that lessons have been learned from previous administrative and sporting disappointments by ensuring the national team receives better planning and preparation.
He argued that uncertainty so close to an international window reflected the structural and coordination problems that have affected Nigerian football.
Sodje also called for a “new beginning”, insisting improved organisation must accompany the ongoing changes around the administration of the sport.
Chelle’s eventual squad contains several established stars, including captain Wilfred Ndidi, Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, Stanley Nwabali and Moses Simon.
There are also first senior invitations for Isaac James, George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor, while Ola Aina and Benjamin Fredricks return to the fold.
Nigeria’s opening two matches are particularly significant, with Tanzania already guaranteed a place at AFCON 2027 as one of the co-hosts.
For Sodje, getting results must begin with getting the preparation right.
His message is that Nigeria cannot demand a different future while repeating the organisational mistakes of the past.
