Canada-born Falconets forward Amber Ogbolu says representing Nigeria has fulfilled a long-held dream, revealing how quickly she has developed a strong connection with her teammates during the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
The Oregon State University forward was born and raised in Canada to Nigerian parents, but says wearing Nigeria’s colours carries special significance for both her and her family.
“Both of my parents are Nigerian, so I’ve always been proud of my Nigerian heritage,” Ogbolu said before the tournament.
“Having the opportunity to wear Nigeria’s colours is a huge honour for me and my family.”
Joining a new national-team environment could have presented challenges, but Ogbolu credits her Falconets teammates and coaching staff with making the transition considerably easier.
“Everyone has been welcoming, and I’ve enjoyed getting to know my teammates and the coaching staff,” she said.
She added that the players had made her comfortable because the squad shares the same ambition of representing Nigeria successfully.
That chemistry has grown during a World Cup campaign in which Nigeria recovered from taking just one point from their opening two matches to reach the knockout stage following a stunning 10-1 victory over New Caledonia.
Ogbolu had declared before travelling to Poland that the Falconets wanted to “bring back the cup,” underlining the scale of her ambition at her first major tournament with Nigeria.
For the 18-year-old, however, the journey already carries meaning beyond results.
From growing up in Edmonton to playing NCAA football in the United States and now wearing Nigeria’s green and white on the world stage, Ogbolu is representing a country she says has always been an important part of her identity.
And after being welcomed into the Falconets family, the dream is no longer simply to represent Nigeria — it is to achieve something special with Nigeria.
