Two Nigerian-born rugby stars have found different shades of fortune coning their way with England’s national team, as Maro Itoje returns to captain the side, but Max Ojomoh bows out with injury.
Sports247 gathered that Itoje, whose father hails from Delta State, was recalled to The Lions’ roster this past weekend and makes a return after being granted time out during their last gathering, as he appeared to be down with fatigue.
On the other hand, Ojomoh, who made the last cut, is not available this time out due to a calf injury he copped in action with his club, thereby ruling him out of the latest roster alongside another Nigerian-born player, Immanuel Feyi-Waboso.
That means the only Nigerian interest to watch out for in England’s upcoming rugby international games is Itoje, who coach of the side, Steve Borthwick will again rely on heavily to lead the squad on the pitch with his passion, speed and strength as long-serving captain of the side.
A report by Sky Sports revealed, “Maro Itoje has been named in England’s first squad since the summer tour, but Courtney Lawes and Joe Marchant must prove themselves for Sale before being recalled.
“Itoje was rested for the Nations Championship games against South Africa, Fiji and Argentina, but features in a 36-man group that will begin preparations for the autumn with a three-day camp starting on Sunday.
“The Saracens second row is expected to resume as captain for the opener against Australia at Allianz Stadium on November 8, taking over from Jamie George, who deputised in July.
“However, Max Ojomoh (calf) and Noah Clauori (wrist) are unavailable, while Tom Roebuck’s selection for Sale on Sunday prevents him from being involved.”
Sports247 gathered further that Itoje will get a chance to play himself back into the heart of England’s rugby fans who felt age was catching up with him, following some shaky form he put up during his last time out in the fold of their beloved national team.
