Nigerian youngster Umar Abubakar made his presence felt from the bench as Famalicão snatched a dramatic 1-1 draw against Portuguese giants Sporting CP with a stoppage-time equaliser in Sunday’s Primeira Liga encounter.
The 20-year-old striker was introduced on the hour mark and provided Famalicão with a physical presence in attack as the hosts battled to find a way through against Sporting.
The contest appeared to be heading the visitors’ way when Luis Suárez struck in the 81st minute, putting Sporting ahead with less than 10 minutes of regulation time remaining.
Famalicão’s task became even more difficult when they were reduced to 10 men following Roméo Beney’s red card in the 87th minute.
But the hosts refused to surrender.
With the game entering stoppage time, Famalicão threw everything forward in search of an equaliser, with Abubakar competing inside the Sporting penalty area as the pressure intensified.
That late pressure eventually produced the decisive moment.
Sporting defender Gonçalo Inácio turned the ball into his own net in the 91st minute, dramatically restoring parity and earning Famalicão a point when defeat had appeared almost certain. Match records confirm the 1-1 result, Abubakar’s 60th-minute introduction and Inácio’s stoppage-time own goal.
For Abubakar, the performance represented another encouraging step in his development in Portugal.
The Kano-born forward is only 20 years old but has gradually worked his way into Famalicão’s senior setup after arriving at the Portuguese club.
Liga Portugal lists the Nigerian as Famalicão’s No.9 for the 2026/27 campaign, while his contract reportedly runs until 2030.
His opportunities this season have largely come from the bench, making every appearance an important opportunity to convince the technical crew that he deserves a bigger role.
Abubakar had already demonstrated his ability to make an impact with limited minutes during the previous campaign.
Official Liga Portugal records show that he scored against Benfica in May 2026 and followed that with another goal against Alverca later that month. He also found the net against AVS earlier in the season.
He finished the 2025/26 Primeira Liga campaign with three goals despite starting only three league matches, according to available statistics.
That ability to influence matches from limited playing time could become particularly important as the Nigerian attempts to establish himself more firmly in Famalicão’s attack.
Standing around 1.90 metres tall, Abubakar offers a significant physical presence in the penalty area, but his career trajectory also points to a forward with considerable goalscoring potential.
Before moving to Portugal, he enjoyed an impressive spell in Belgium with Jong Gent, where his performances helped put him on the radar before his move to Famalicão.
His development is also of interest from a Nigerian perspective.
Abubakar previously represented Nigeria at U17 level, featuring at the 2023 Africa U17 Cup of Nations, and his continued progress in one of Europe’s established top-flight leagues provides another young attacking option to watch.
There remains plenty of work ahead before discussions about senior international recognition become inevitable, particularly as he continues fighting for regular starting opportunities at club level.
But performances against opponents of Sporting’s calibre can only help his cause.
Famalicão were seconds away from defeat, down to 10 men and facing one of Portuguese football’s traditional powers.
Then came one final attack.
Abubakar was thrown into the battle, Famalicão refused to give up, and a 91st-minute own goal ensured Sporting left with only one point. For the 20-year-old Nigerian, it was another opportunity to show that even when he doesn’t start, he can still make his presence felt.
