Leeds United of England striker Noah Okafor has raised serious allegations about ‘betrayal of trust and unkept commitments’ when he played for Switzerland’s national team, hence his decision to call it quits.
Sports247 reports further that, while not mentioning any names, Okafor also accused some ‘people’ of mocking him for what he referred to as ‘minor mistakes’ when he played for the country at the recent FIFA World Cup.
The 26-year-old mulatto, who previously played for Basel of Switzerland, Salzburg of Austria as well as AC Milan and SSC Napoli of Italy, went on to specifically mention the Swiss team’s coach, Murat Yakin in his grievances.
Okafor added emphatically that he will no longer play for Switzerland’s national team under Yakin, due to a breakdown in trust with the manager, who gave him 19 minutes of action as a substitute in a last-32 loss to Algeria at the World Cup.
That game took his international appearances to 26 matches, but Okafor stressed that lack of abundant playing time was not his worry, as much as it was in the way he was mocked and betrayed.
Okafor disclosed with a post on Istagram: “My decision has nothing to do with my playing time. Things happened that hurt me deeply. Trust was broken.
“Commitments were not kept. When I was allowed to play against Algeria, people reacted to minor mistakes far away from our goal in a way that hurt me deeply.
“In the weeks that followed, I thought a lot and decided for myself that I no longer want to play for the national team under the current manager.”
