Falconets head coach Moses Aduku says Nigeria must secure victory against China on Thursday to keep their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup alive.
Nigeria suffered a 2–0 defeat to Spain in their opening Group F match on Monday, leaving Aduku’s side with little room for error ahead of their second group encounter at the Stadion Sosnowiec in Poland.
Aduku acknowledged the significance of the fixture, insisting that the Falconets understand what is at stake and must produce a much-improved performance against a confident Chinese side.
“For the second game, we are condemned to win to stay afloat in the competition. Therefore, we are giving our all. The girls are aware of what is at stake.”
China enter the contest with confidence after opening their campaign with a commanding 5–0 victory over New Caledonia, a result that put them at the top of Group F on goal difference ahead of Spain.
Despite China’s impressive start, Aduku insists his players are not intimidated and have used the lessons from the defeat to Spain to prepare for Thursday’s crucial encounter.
The Nigerian coach admitted that the Falconets were below their best against Spain, particularly in front of goal, and said the technical crew has worked on those shortcomings in training.
“We have put the match against Spain behind us and are focusing totally on the clash with China. The players are ready to come out stronger for the match against China.”
Nigeria’s history at the competition provides another source of motivation. The Falconets have reached the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup final twice, finishing runners-up in 2010 and 2014, and have qualified for every edition since the tournament began in 2002.
The Falconets have also faced China twice previously at the tournament. China won their 2006 group-stage meeting 3–0, while the sides played out a 1–1 draw in 2018, with the result helping Nigeria advance to the quarter-finals.
With New Caledonia still to come in their final group fixture, victory over China would significantly improve Nigeria’s chances of reaching the next round.
For Aduku and his players, however, the immediate task is simple: win, collect three points and revive the Falconets’ World Cup campaign.
