Nigeria’s Junior Female YellowGreens star Omosigho Eguakun has described her recognition as the best batter of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier as a major boost, following her influential contribution to Nigeria’s unbeaten campaign and qualification for the 2027 World Cup.
Eguakun was one of the standout performers as Nigeria dominated the competition in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, winning all five of their matches and securing Africa’s sole qualification ticket to next year’s tournament in Bangladesh and Nepal.
The young batter played a key role from the opening match, scoring 24 runs from 29 balls against Uganda to help Nigeria negotiate a difficult chase in their four-wicket victory.
She then produced one of her best performances of the tournament against hosts Tanzania, smashing an impressive 50 from 46 balls, including seven boundaries, as Nigeria finished top of Group A with a maximum six points.
Her half-century earned her the Player of the Match award and underlined her growing importance to the Nigerian side.
Eguakun maintained that consistency in the semi-final against Rwanda, remaining unbeaten on 35 from 29 deliveries to help Nigeria complete a commanding nine-wicket victory and book their place in the final.
Reflecting on her individual recognition, Eguakun said the award has given her additional motivation to continue improving.
“Winning the best batter award is a major boost for me. I’m grateful to my coaches and teammates for their belief and support throughout the tournament.”
Rather than focusing solely on the personal achievement, however, the young batter said her priority remains contributing to the team’s success and preparing for the tougher challenges that await at the World Cup.
“I’m looking forward to improving my game, facing tougher opposition at the World Cup and continuing to contribute as a team player.”
Her performances formed part of a remarkable campaign in which Nigeria demonstrated strength with both bat and ball.
The team entered the competition with the objective of securing the continent’s only qualification place and remained unbeaten throughout, eventually defeating Zimbabwe by four runs in a tense final after successfully defending 98 runs.
While captain Christabel Chukwuonye provided leadership at crucial moments, Eguakun’s batting consistency gave Nigeria an important foundation throughout the tournament.
The World Cup qualification means Nigeria will make a second appearance at the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, having also competed at the 2025 edition.
For Eguakun, the individual award is therefore not the destination but another milestone in what could become an important international career.
With the World Cup now ahead, the Nigerian batter knows the standard will rise considerably — and she is already looking forward to testing herself against the world’s best young cricketers.
The award belongs to Eguakun. The bigger prize, however, is still ahead.
