A young goalkeeper in Ifako area of Lagos, Iheanacho Kelechi has vowed to continue pushing towards his football dreams despite what he describes as discrimination and bias against him during his journey in the game,
Sports247 reports that the promising shot-stopper, who is competing in the under-16 category of the Ifako Unity Summer Championship 2026, spoke passionately about his ambitions, challenges and determination to reach the highest level of football.
His name naturally draws comparisons with former Super Eagles striker, Kelechi Iheanacho. However, while the more established Iheanacho made his name as a forward, the young participant at the Ifako Unity Summer Championship is determined to carve out his own identity between the goalposts.
Asked whether he sees himself as a better player than the established footballer, the young goalkeeper remained humble and admitted he still has a long way to go.
“I don’t see myself as better than Kelechi Iheanacho because he is already there, and I’m planning to be there. So, I will continue pushing myself to get there,” he said.
However, Iheanacho expressed confidence in his ability to develop into a top goalkeeper through consistent hard work and dedication.
“Yes, I see myself becoming better if I continue training and practising what I’m good at,” he asserted with optimism.
The young goalkeeper also opened up about some of the difficulties he has encountered in his football journey, including what he described as discrimination, bias and criticism.
He added, “I don’t like discrimination and people being biased against me. Some people condemn me, while some like me. In this football career, plenty of people have their own way of life, but I don’t care. I will continue doing what I’m doing.”
Despite the obstacles, Iheanacho remains focused on achieving his dreams and believes his future in football could take him to greater heights and said, “I see myself in plenty places, in high places and among men with talent.”
Speaking on the importance of the Ifako Unity Summer Championship, the teenager said the competition provides him with an opportunity to showcase his abilities and potentially attract greater opportunities.
“Yeah, I think if I continue doing what I’m doing well and keep improving as usual, I think this competition will bring out my talent,” Iheanacho concluded.
