Nigeria’s male rugby team, The Stallions will step out in search of a World Cup ticket next month, when they battle Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ghana, Tunisia, Morocco and Senegal during a major qualification competition.
Sports247 reports that The Stallions will be in the hunt for a prestigious ticket to the global sevens circuit when they step out from September 26th to 27th at the World Rugby SVNS 3 Qualifiers 2026 in Uganda.
This follows a confirmation by Rugby Africa that Nigeria is one of eight countries that will feature in the competition that was initially scheduled as a 12-team men’s sevens in Mauritius but was postponed due to the Ebola outbreak.
Uganda will now host an eight-team SVNS 3 qualifying tournament in a revised format, while Mauritius later host the Africa Men’s Sevens tournament in October, ahead of which South Africa, Kenya and Burkina Faso are already confirmed to join the contest along with four other countries.
Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) media contact, Tolu Oguntimehin added, “The tournament will open the 2026 Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens Series, with the winner earning qualification for the World Rugby SVNS 3 2027 competition.
“Beyond qualification, the tournament offers Nigeria an opportunity to improve its continental standing. The winner will be ranked third in Africa, while the team finishing last will occupy the eighth position.
“For the Stallions, the Uganda assignment is more than a continental competition. It is an opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s growing rugby sevens programme, improve its African ranking and secure a pathway to the international stage.”
Sports247 gathered further that Nigeria will be hoping to seize the upcoming competition as a huge opportunity and The Stallions will aim to emerge from Uganda with the coveted qualification ticket to the 2027 World Rugby SVNS 3 circuit.
