Nigeria’s leading athlete of the current generation, Tobi Amusan will be in action this Thursday, as she heads into a huge showdown with USA’s women’s 100m hurdles Olympic Games champion, Masai Russell at the Weltklasse in Zürich, Switzerland.
Sports247 reports that it’s the last Wanda Diamond League meeting of the season, ahead of the series final in Brussels, Belgium next month, and Amusan will be all out to get into pole position among the pack of stars, as champions in various events contest across two days.
It started with the women’s pole vault city event at Zurich Main Station on Wednesday, while the grand events are at Letzigrund Stadium on Thursday, with Amusan listed among top stars to watch, while hoping to make up for her unexpected bronze at the Commonwealth Games.
Apart from the imposing presence of Russell on the tracks, Amusan will also be up against additional pressure from Danielle Williams and Ditaji Kambundji; while fellow-Nigerians Ezekiel Nathaniel and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi will compete in 400mH and shot put respectively.
A preview on the official website of World Athletics noted in part, “USA’s Olympic champion Masai Russell will aim to maintain her season-long win streak in the 100m hurdles – a season that includes a 12.14 performance in Xiamen in May, a mark just 0.02 off the world record.
“She faces world record-holder Tobi Amusan, Alaysha Johnson, Nadine Visser and home favourite Ditaji Kambundji; while World bronze medallist Emma Zapletalová is another athlete looking to extend her dominance as she goes for a sixth Diamond League win of the year in the 400m hurdles.”
Sports247 reports that Thursday’s race will be an opportunity for Amusan to show that she has recovered from the setback of her 12.60 seconds in the Glasgow 2026 final, which was only good enough for bronze, thereby ending her bid for a third Commonwealth gold after wins in 2018 and 2022.
