Super Eagles goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo also made an immediate impression following his season-long loan move from Wrexham to EFL Championship side Charlton Athletic. The 24-year-old produced a superb debut, making eight saves to help Charlton secure a hard-fought 2-1 away victory over West Ham.
Tolu Arokodare made his presence felt for Ajax in the UEFA Conference League qualifiers, coming off the bench to score one goal and provide an assist as the Dutch giants secured an away victory over Sion.
In England, Taiwo Awoniyi made his Coventry City debut, while Frank Onyeka also featured in their opening fixture against Arsenal. The Nigerians, however, ended the game on the losing side as Arsenal claimed a 3-0 victory.
Victor Osimhen continued to strengthen his place in Galatasaray history after scoring twice to take his tally for the Turkish club to 62 goals. The Nigerian striker is now the third-highest-scoring foreign player in the club’s history, behind Mauro Icardi’s 77 goals and Gheorghe Hagi’s 72.
Osimhen is now 16 goals away from surpassing Icardi and potentially becoming Galatasaray’s all-time leading foreign goalscorer.
Nathan Tella also opened his season account for Bayer Leverkusen, coming off the bench to score in their 4-0 DFB-Pokal victory over Wehen Wiesbaden. Tella played 25 minutes, while fellow Nigerian Victor Boniface remained an unused substitute.
Super Eagles centre-back Semi Ajayi was another Nigerian on the scoresheet, opening the scoring in the 17th minute as Hull City defeated Manchester United. Mendy doubled Hull’s advantage in the 38th minute.
Meanwhile, Ola Aina featured for Nottingham Forest in their season opener against Leeds United, but his side suffered a late setback after Anton Stach scored in the 88th minute to secure victory for the visitors.
With the European season gathering momentum, Nigerian players abroad are already producing eye-catching performances, offering encouraging signs ahead of another demanding campaign for the Super Eagles.
