Nzekwe Tochukwu Augustus: ‘I Want to Become More Than Just Another Footballer’

For aspiring footballer Nzekwe Tochukwu Augustus, football is more than a game—it is a lifelong passion, a source of purpose and a platform through which he hopes to inspire the next generation.

The youngster, who hails from Aguleri in Anambra State, Nigeria, revealed in an exclusive interview with Sports247 that his football journey began about 17 years ago during his primary school days.

His earliest memories of the sport were simple. He played with classmates during school breaks and continued on the streets with friends after school. Those childhood games, he explained, gradually became the foundation of an ambition that has remained with him.

“I started playing football at a very young age in Abuja, and by the age of seven, I already believed that I was going to become a football star,” he said.

Unlike many players who point to a particular individual as their inspiration, Tochukwu said his passion developed naturally.

“Nobody specifically inspired me to start playing. The passion came naturally. Football has always been a part of me.”

His journey, however, has not been without challenges. One of the biggest has been adapting to different teammates, personalities and playing styles. Rather than allowing the difficulty to discourage him, Tochukwu believes it has helped him mature tactically and mentally.

He credits his family for providing important support throughout his development. His mother encouraged his passion by regularly buying him footballs, while his father continued to support his ambitions. He also singled out his coach, Raf Nweke, for his guidance and contribution to his development.

Looking ahead, Tochukwu has ambitions that extend beyond simply becoming a professional player. He dreams of representing major European clubs, particularly Chelsea and Liverpool, while ultimately competing at the highest level of the game.

“I do not want to be just another footballer. I want to become a role model for young and aspiring footballers who dream of reaching the professional level,” he explained.

Beyond football, he hopes success will allow him to give back to society through education, sports, infrastructure and youth development initiatives.

For Tochukwu, the ultimate dream is therefore bigger than trophies and personal recognition. He wants his football journey to become a story of hard work, discipline, inspiration and service, proving that success on the pitch can create opportunities for others off it.

As he continues his pursuit of professional football, the young Nigerian remains focused on one objective: becoming the best version of himself while building a legacy that extends far beyond the football field.
