‘He Has Everything’ — Arbeloa Tips Calvin Bassey for Leadership Role at Fulham

Fulham head coach Álvaro Arbeloa has singled out Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey for praise, describing the Nigerian as a complete player who has the qualities to become an important leader within the squad.

Arbeloa, who took charge of Fulham ahead of the 2026/27 season, believes Bassey’s pace, defensive ability and experience make him particularly suited to the high defensive line the Spaniard wants his team to operate.

The Fulham manager has also been impressed by Bassey’s attitude during training and his personality away from the pitch, identifying the 26-year-old as someone capable of taking greater responsibility within the dressing room.

“Calvin is a proper player. He has everything. He’s a really funny guy, but when we have to work, he’s the first one.”

Arbeloa went further by suggesting that Bassey could develop into one of Fulham’s leaders.

“I really love Calvin. He can be our leader.”

The Nigerian defender has established himself as an important member of the Fulham squad since joining from Ajax in 2023. He is capable of playing both centre-back and left-back, giving Arbeloa additional flexibility in defence.

Bassey’s suitability for Arbeloa’s tactical approach is also linked to his recovery pace. The Fulham boss wants his side to defend higher up the pitch, and Bassey’s speed allows him to cover space behind the defensive line when opponents attempt to exploit it.

His influence has already been evident during pre-season, with Bassey trusted with the captain’s armband in Fulham’s final preparations for the new campaign.

The defender was also involved in Fulham’s controversial pre-season encounter with Málaga, which ended 2–2 before the English side left the pitch following a dispute over a proposed penalty shootout. Bassey was reported to have encouraged his teammates to leave the field after the disagreement.

Bassey’s growing status at Fulham comes as the club prepares for another Premier League campaign under Arbeloa, with the manager looking to combine experienced players with a younger squad.

Arbeloa’s backing places Bassey among the players expected to carry greater responsibility as Fulham begin a new era under the Spanish coach.
