The national president of Grassroots Sports Federation (GRASOF), Honourable John Ekpenyong has outlined several factors that informed the appointment of former Golden Eaglets’ coach, Fanny Amun as an ambassador for the 3rd Senate President U-18 Annual Unity Cup.
Sports247 reports that, while shedding more light on details of the competition, which is scheduled to hold from October to November in Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District, Akwa Ibom State, Ekpenyong said the choice of Amun is based on his pedigree as a youth developer.
Ekpenyong explained further in a press statement that the appointment is also in recognition of Amun’s contributions to Nigerian football as a coach, administrator, promoter and instructor, all of which will strengthen the tournament’s objectives of talent discovery and youth empowerment.
While also highligthing the competition’s objectives of peace, unity and national development through sports, Ekpenyong added that Amun is highly respected as handler of the 1993 FIFA U-17 World Cup-winning Eaglets’ squad and a former secretary-general of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
He also noted Amun’s status as a former technical director of the NFF and esrtwhile assistant director in the Federal Ministry of Sports, based on which Ekpenyong believes the tactician from Edo State will bring a wealth of experience and expertise into the forthcoming youth competition.
“GRASOF congratulates Ambassador Fanny Amun, MON, on this appointment and looks forward to his contribution towards making the 2026 edition a memorable celebration of youth football, unity and national development.
“As our ambassador, Amun is expected to serve as a prominent face and voice of the tournament, mentor participating young athletes, promote grassroots talent discovery and champion the GRASOF vision of using sports as a vehicle for peace, unity and youth empowerment.
“Ambassador Amun’s experience, passion and commitment to grassroots football will add significant value to the third edition and inspire the next generation of Nigerian football talents,” Ekpenyong stated in his press release.
Sports247 gathered further that the 3rd Senate President U-18 Annual Unity Cup will feature 24 male and female teams from various zones across Nigeria, with Akwa Ibom State serving as host of what is expected to be another glamourous and exciting contest from October to November.
