Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) is filled with delight, and the officials are celebrating the country’s emergence as the second-best contingent at this year’s global youth championship in Nairobi, Kenya.
Sports247 gathered that, apart from clinching runners-up spot in the overall table, the Nigerian team also hooked a number of individual honours among 134 young players from across the world.
This was disclosed by the SFN’s spokesman, Maxwell Kumoye, who revealed in a press release that the players of Team Nigeria excelled in the contest that covered 24 gruelling rounds over three days.
Kumoye added that Sophia Ekeruche successfully defended the Best Female Player title she won in Malaysia last year, while Yusuf Abdulsalam emerged champion in the U-8 category.
Abdulsalam was also named Best Kid of the Tournament, while Salvation Onazi finished as second runner-up in the U-10 category and Saviour Onazi claimed third place in the U-12 category.
In the U-16 category, Olamide Hassan emerged as second runner-up and placed 10th overall, while the entire team’s strong performance earned Nigeria the award of Second Best Country at the championship.
Kumoye stated, “The achievement was made possible in part by support from the Kwara State Government, which has backed Nigerian Scrabble for about six years under Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
“For the Nairobi championship, the Kwara State government funded the travel of four players and two officials, helping Nigeria avoid missing another major international youth competition.
“The Bayelsa and Niger State Governments also provided support to the team. The Nigerian contingent was guided by coach Hassan Olojoku Abdulrafiu.”
Sports247 reports further that the scrabble team’s success in Nairobi came on a say when two of Nigeria’s national football teams and another couple from basketball (each with male and female squads) fell in defeats in various international fixtures.
