The leadership of the Nigeria Customs Service (NSC) has promised to provide sponsorship for outstanding students who excel during its one-week multiple-events competition, which ends this Monday at Wale Adeniyi Sports Arena, Western Marine Command, Ibafon, Apapa, Lagos.
Sports247 reports that the promise was made by the area controller of Western Marine Command, Comptroller Patrick Ntadi, who disclosed that the competition was designed to promote grassroots sports development and strengthen community engagement.
Ntadi added that the competition, which is organised in partnership with the Ajeromi-Ifelodun chapter of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), also helps foster closer collaboration between the NCS and owners, teachers, students and officials of secondary schools.
As part of the opening ceremony, Western Marine Command commissioned an operational patrol boat named in honour of Deputy Comptroller of Customs Akpevwe Ogboru, the first female officer to complete a solo cross-continental motorcycle expedition from Nigeria to Belgium and back.
Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, represented by Zone-A coordinator, Assistant Comptroller-General Mohammed Babandede, said the competition features 13 secondary schools competing in football, basketball, volleyball, chess, table tennis and scrabble.
While also citing the competition as the beginning of a mutually beneficial partnership between Nigeria Customs Service and NAPPS, Ntadi added that it is a strategic initiative and social engagement programme that will help to strengthen relationships between the customs and its host communities.
“Anyone who distinguishes themselves will receive sponsorship from the Nigeria Customs Service. The Comptroller-General has assured support for those who emerge victorious. Our aim is to produce smart, sports individuals and take children from the streets,” Ntadi asserted.
