Team Nigeria’s outstanding campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games reached another historic milestone on Wednesday as Goodness Nwachukwu produced a sensational world-record throw of 39.66 metres to win gold in the Women’s Discus Throw F42-44/F61-64.
The Nigerian para-athletics star thrilled spectators at Scotstoun Stadium with a breathtaking performance that saw the stadium scoreboard flash “NEW WR”, confirming she had broken the world record and added another memorable chapter to Nigeria’s remarkable Commonwealth Games journey.
Competing under the para-athletics points system, Nwachukwu amassed an impressive 1,130 points to comfortably secure the gold medal.
She finished ahead of Funmi Oduwaiye of Wales, who claimed silver with 38.52m (931 points), while fellow Welsh athlete Bree Cronin took bronze with 36.00m (861 points).
Nigeria also had another strong showing through Destiny Agbo, who recorded a personal best of 33.79m to finish fifth with 787 points, highlighting the country’s growing strength in para athletics.
The latest triumph further cements Nwachukwu’s status as one of the world’s finest para discus throwers. After announcing herself on the global stage with Commonwealth gold and a world record in Birmingham 2022, she has now raised the standard once again by extending her own world mark to 39.66 metres.
Her victory is Nigeria’s seventh gold medal of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games and another powerful statement that Team Nigeria remains one of the standout nations at the Games.
