National record holder Kanyinsola Ajayi, sprint sensation Favour Ashe, women’s 100m star Rosemary Chukwuma, high jumper Temitope Adeshina, and several other Team Nigeria athletes will be in action on Tuesday as the athletics competition gathers momentum at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
With places in the men’s and women’s 100m finals, 400m semi-finals, and medals in the field events up for grabs, Team Nigeria will be looking to build on its impressive performances and strengthen its position on the medals table.
The day’s programme begins with the women’s 400 metres first round, where experienced quarter-miler Patience Okon George will compete in Heat 2 from lane six.
The Commonwealth Games veteran heads into the race with a season’s best of 51.41 seconds and will be aiming to secure one of the qualification spots for the semi-finals.
Fellow Nigerian Esther Elo Joseph will feature in Heat 3 from lane two. With a season’s best of 50.97 seconds, Joseph will also be targeting progression to the next round.
Nigeria’s only representative in the men’s 400 metres, Edidiong Udo, will line up in Heat 1 from lane four.
The talented runner, who owns a season’s best of 44.91 seconds, will be hoping to keep Nigeria’s hopes alive in the event by advancing to the semi-finals.
Attention will then turn to the women’s 100 metres semi-finals, where Rosemary Chukwuma, Blessing Ogundiran, and Miracle Oluebube Ezechukwu will each compete in separate races, giving Nigeria three opportunities to qualify for the final.
Chukwuma runs in Semi-final 1, Ogundiran in Semi-final 2, while Ezechukwu takes to the track in Semi-final 3.
The men’s 100 metres semi-finals promise to be one of the highlights of the day, with Favour Ashe, Kanyinsola Ajayi, and Adekalu Fakorede all chasing places in the championship race.
Ashe, who has a season’s best of 9.93 seconds, competes in Semi-final 1, while Ajayi, Nigeria’s national record holder and one of the event favourites after clocking a season-best 9.84 seconds, lines up in Semi-final 2.
Fakorede, who has run 9.98 seconds this season, will contest Semi-final 3.
Nigeria will also have strong medal prospects in the field events.
Temitope Adeshina, who has cleared 1.97m this season, will compete in the women’s high jump final with genuine hopes of reaching the podium.
Meanwhile, Oyesade Olatoye will represent the country in the women’s hammer throw, taking a season’s best of 70.46m into the competition.
Should Nigeria’s sprinters progress from their respective semi-finals, they will return later in the evening for the men’s and women’s 100 metres finals, capping what promises to be one of Team Nigeria’s busiest and most important days of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
With several athletes in contention for finals and medals, Tuesday presents another significant opportunity for Team Nigeria to enhance its impressive campaign.
