Nigeria has officially unveiled a formidable 74-athlete contingent for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, with the country aiming to surpass its previous medal records at one of the world’s biggest multi-sport events.
The contingent will compete across 10 sports, including athletics, boxing, weightlifting, para powerlifting, para athletics, swimming, judo, track cycling, 3×3 basketball and 3×3 wheelchair basketball.
Athletics boasts the largest Nigerian contingent, headlined by world record holder Tobi Amusan, sprint sensation Kanyinsola Ajayi, Commonwealth medal hopeful Samuel Ogazi, Favour Ashe, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, Rosemary Chukwuma, Prestina Ochonogor, and Ruth Usoro.
In boxing, Nigeria will rely on the likes of Kadijat Ajishola, Patricia Mbata, Blessing Oraekwe, Ayomide Foly and David Akintola, while the weightlifting team features Rafiatu Lawal, Onome Didih, Ruth Ayodele, Mary Osijo, Favour Agboro, Adedapo Opadeji and Edidiong Umoafia.
The para sports contingent is also expected to be among Nigeria’s strongest medal contenders, with experienced athletes such as Esther Nworgu, Roland Ezuruike, Alice Owolabi-Oluwafemiayo, Rita Ferdinand, Destiny Agbo, Goodness Nwachukwu and Eucharia Iyiazi leading the charge.
Nigeria will also be represented in swimming, judo, track cycling, 3×3 basketball and 3×3 wheelchair basketball, reflecting the country’s growing competitiveness across multiple disciplines.
The National Sports Commission has set an ambitious target of between 16 and 20 gold medals, with officials expressing confidence that Team Nigeria can produce one of its finest performances in Commonwealth Games history.
Nigeria enters Glasgow with an impressive Commonwealth Games pedigree, having won 271 medals across previous editions—comprising 82 gold, 84 silver and 105 bronze medals.
With a blend of established champions and exciting young talents, Team Nigeria will be looking to write another memorable chapter when the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games get underway.
