Nigeria’s rising shot put sensation, Jessica Oji, says she is eager to make her Commonwealth Games debut and is determined to compete for a medal after months of intensive preparation.
The African Under-20 shot put record holder will be one of Team Nigeria’s brightest prospects in athletics when competition begins in Glasgow, with the youngster hoping to announce herself on one of the biggest stages in Commonwealth sport.
Speaking ahead of the Games, Oji expressed her excitement at representing Nigeria, describing the opportunity as a dream she has worked tirelessly to achieve.
“I can’t wait to get started and represent Nigeria. I’ve been working very hard to make sure I’m in the best possible shape for this competition,” Oji said.
The teenage athlete also commended the National Sports Commission (NSC) for the quality of facilities and support provided to Team Nigeria, noting that the preparations have given athletes the best possible platform to perform.
“The facilities have been excellent. This is one of the best environments I’ve trained in, and it gives us confidence going into the Games,” she added.
Oji has emerged as one of Nigeria’s most promising field athletes after breaking the African Under-20 record in the women’s shot put, a feat that has strengthened expectations of a bright future on the international stage.
Her rapid development has also underlined the country’s growing depth in field events, an area where Nigeria has continued to invest in nurturing young talent.
While acknowledging the calibre of opposition expected in Glasgow, Oji remains confident that her preparation and hard work can translate into a podium finish.
“I’m hopeful of winning something for Nigeria. That’s my goal, and I’ll give everything I have when I step into the circle,” she said.
