The countdown is over as the 23rd Commonwealth Games officially begin on Thursday, July 23, with the Opening Ceremony in Glasgow set to usher in 11 days of elite sporting action featuring more than 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories.
For Team Nigeria, the ceremony marks the start of another quest for medals as the country makes its 20th appearance at the Commonwealth Games, exactly 76 years after its debut at the Auckland 1950 Games.

Nigeria’s 74-athlete contingent has completed preparations in Scotland and is expected to make a colourful entrance during the Parade of Nations inside the OVO Hydro, dressed in elegant green-and-white ceremonial attire that reflects the nation’s rich cultural heritage.
Accompanying the athletes are key officials, including National Sports Commission Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko, Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, Commonwealth Games ambassadors, former NSC Directors General Gbenga Elegbeleye and Alhassan Yakmut, respected sports administrator Dr. Amos Adamu, and veteran broadcaster Victor Ilore.
The Opening Ceremony begins at 8:00 p.m. BST (7:00 p.m. GMT), which is 8:00 p.m. Nigerian time (WAT), and is scheduled to conclude at 1100 p.m. WAT.
The ceremony will make history as the first Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony to be staged entirely indoors, with the iconic OVO Hydro replacing the traditional outdoor stadium setting.
Scottish music star KT Tunstall will headline the entertainment, joined by Callum Beattie, Nina Nesbitt, Nathan Evans, SAINT PHNX, while electronic folk duo Valtos will provide the soundtrack for the Parade of Nations.
The event will also feature the conclusion of the King’s Baton Relay, with King Charles III expected to officially declare the Games open.
Fans in Nigeria can follow the ceremony live on the local Nigeria Television stations as free terrestrial broadcast is available for the games.
The audience can also follow and watch in Pay TV platforms as well Commonwealth Sport digital platforms, while selected international broadcasters, including ESPN, will also provide live coverage, depending on regional broadcast rights.
Competition begins on Friday, July 24, with medals to be contested across 10 sports and a total of 215 gold medals available before the Games conclude on August 2.
Armed with a squad featuring Olympic, Paralympic, Commonwealth and world champions, Team Nigeria will be aiming to extend its proud legacy and challenge for podium finishes throughout Glasgow 2026.
