National fencing coach Ibrahim Alogba has expressed confidence that Nigeria possesses the quality and unity needed to mount a strong medal challenge at the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships, which will take place in Lagos from August 9 to 14.
With Nigeria preparing to host the prestigious event for the first time, Alogba believes the home advantage, combined with months of intensive preparations, has put the national team in a strong position to compete against some of the Commonwealth’s leading fencing nations.
The championships will attract elite fencers from countries including England, Scotland, Canada, Australia, South Africa and India, providing Nigeria with one of its biggest tests on home soil.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Alogba said the atmosphere within the national camp has improved significantly, with stronger relationships among the athletes translating into better performances during training.
«”The team is well prepared for the Commonwealth Fencing Championships. The bond among the athletes is much stronger now, and that has made us more competitive than before,” Alogba said.»
The national coach believes teamwork has become one of the squad’s greatest strengths, noting that the positive environment within the camp has enhanced communication, confidence and the willingness of the athletes to push one another towards higher standards.
«”As fencing continues to grow in Nigeria, this unity will be very important. The athletes are working together, encouraging one another and that will help us in our quest for medals,” he added.»
Nigeria has made steady progress in international fencing over the past few years, with the Nigerian Fencing Federation increasing participation in continental and global competitions while investing in the development of young talents.
Hosting the Commonwealth Fencing Championships is widely seen as another landmark in the sport’s growth, offering Nigerian fencers a rare opportunity to compete against world-class opposition in front of home supporters.
Alogba believes that beyond the technical improvements made during training, the players’ collective mindset has become a decisive factor heading into the competition.
For the coach, success in Lagos will not be determined solely by individual brilliance but by the unity, discipline and resilience the team has developed throughout its preparations.
