After months of planning, weeks of preparation and days of anticipation, Team Nigeria is now just one day away from stepping onto the grand stage of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, ready to represent more than 200 million Nigerians in one of the world’s biggest multi-sport events.
Tomorrow, the Green and White will once again march proudly among the nations of the Commonwealth, carrying with them not just hopes and expectations, but a legacy that has been built over 76 remarkable years.

Since making its Commonwealth Games debut in Auckland in 1950, Nigeria has grown into one of the competition’s most respected sporting nations. From a humble beginning with a single silver medal won by high jumper Joshua Majekodunmi, Team Nigeria has risen to become a consistent force across athletics, wrestling, weightlifting, boxing and para sports.
Today, that legacy stands at an impressive 271 Commonwealth Games medals—82 gold, 84 silver and 105 bronze.
Each medal tells a story of resilience.
Each podium finish represents years of sacrifice.
Each victory has inspired generations of young Nigerians to dream beyond limits.
Now, Glasgow offers another opportunity to build on that extraordinary record.
Over the past few weeks, Team Nigeria has completed intensive preparations in Aberdeen, Scotland, where athletes trained, acclimatized and fine-tuned every aspect of their performance before making the final move into the Games Village.
The confidence within the camp has been strengthened by impressive performances in the lead-up to the Games.
Sprint sensation Kayinsola Ajayi arrives in Glasgow after equalling the Nigerian men’s 100m national record of 9.84 seconds for the third time this season with a commanding victory at the London Diamond League, reaffirming his status as one of Nigeria’s brightest medal prospects.
Nigeria’s para powerlifting team also enters the Games with high expectations, led by reigning Commonwealth champion and multiple-time world champion Folashade Oluwafemiayo, who will be among the favourites when the first medals of the Games are contested.
Across wrestling, athletics, boxing, weightlifting, table tennis and other sports, Team Nigeria boasts a blend of experienced champions and exciting young talents determined to make their mark on the Commonwealth stage.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has expressed confidence in the team’s readiness, setting an ambitious target of 20 gold medals—a feat that would eclipse Nigeria’s previous best of 12 gold medals, achieved at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
To further motivate the athletes, the Commission has introduced enhanced financial incentives, including instant cash rewards and additional performance bonuses for medal winners and their coaches, reinforcing the Federal Government’s commitment to excellence in sport.
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, which run from July 23 to August 2, will feature approximately 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth Games Associations, competing for 215 gold medals across 11 sports.
For Scotland, it is another proud moment as the nation hosts the Commonwealth Games for the fourth time.
For Nigeria, it is another chance to inspire a nation.
As the final hours tick away, excitement is building across the country. From Lagos to Kano, Port Harcourt to Enugu, Abuja to Maiduguri, millions of Nigerians are preparing to cheer every race, every lift, every bout and every victory.
