One of Nigeria’s leading sprint stars, Favour Ashe, believes the country is well-positioned to deliver another memorable outing, insisting the athletes are fully focused on winning medals and making Nigerians proud.

“We have prepared well and everyone is focused on giving their best. Team Nigeria has a strong tradition at the Commonwealth Games, and we are confident we can compete for medals and make Nigerians proud,” Ashe said.

The excitement surrounding the Games is also heightened by confirmation that King Charles III and Queen Camilla will attend the Opening Ceremony on Thursday, July 23, at The Hydro in Glasgow, where the monarch will officially declare the XXIII Commonwealth Games open.

More than 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories will compete across 10 sports, with 215 gold medals up for grabs during the 11-day festival of sport.

A key moment of the ceremony will be King Charles III reading the message placed inside the King’s Baton on Commonwealth Day at Buckingham Palace on March 10, 2025, before the Baton Relay embarked on its record-breaking journey.

British cycling icon Sir Chris Hoy, the relay’s first Batonbearer, will also feature during the ceremony.

The King’s Baton Relay has completed a historic 500-day journey through all 74 Commonwealth nations and territories—the longest relay in the history of the Games.

For the first time, all 74 Batons will be reunited in Glasgow, symbolising the unity, diversity and shared values of the Commonwealth.

The relay also promoted the Commonwealth Clean Ocean Plastics Campaign, delivered in partnership with the Royal Commonwealth Society, encouraging communities across member nations to prevent one million pieces of plastic from entering Commonwealth waters.

As the countdown continues, Team Nigeria will be aiming to add another successful chapter to its impressive Commonwealth Games history.

Nigeria athletes expected to challenge for medals across several events and reinforce the country’s status as one of Africa’s leading sporting nations.
