Stanley Nwabali Completes Surprise Chippa United Return Five Months After Exit

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has completed a surprise return to South African Premier Division side Chippa United, just five months after leaving the club by mutual consent.

The Eastern Cape outfit confirmed the return of their former first-choice goalkeeper ahead of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season, bringing an end to months of speculation surrounding the Nigerian international’s future.

Nwabali parted ways with Chippa United in February 2026 after requesting to leave the club in search of a new challenge. Despite attracting reported interest from clubs in Europe, North Africa and elsewhere in South Africa, a move failed to materialise, leaving the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations star without a club for several months.

«Chippa United welcomed the Nigerian goalkeeper back in an official statement, expressing delight at his return to the club ahead of the new campaign.»

Nwabali established himself as one of the Betway Premiership’s standout goalkeepers during his first spell at Chippa United after joining the club in 2022. His impressive performances earned him Nigeria’s No. 1 jersey, and he played a pivotal role in the Super Eagles’ run to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final, where he became one of the tournament’s breakout stars.

The 30-year-old now returns to familiar surroundings with the opportunity to rebuild his club career while strengthening his position as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper ahead of upcoming international assignments.

Nwabali is expected to link up with his teammates immediately for pre-season preparations as Chippa United begin their build-up to the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign.
