‘Disability Is Not Inability’ — JONAPWD President Hails Canada’s Inclusive Football Initiative

President of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, Abdullahi Aliya Usman, has applauded the Government of Canada and the organisers of the Abuja Diplomatic Soccer Tournament for using football to champion inclusion and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Speaking during the tournament in Abuja, Usman described the initiative as a powerful statement that disability should never prevent anyone from participating fully in society.

“Persons with disabilities have equal rights and equal opportunities despite their conditions,” Usman said.

He stressed that programmes promoting inclusion help break down stereotypes, encourage social integration and strengthen national unity.

According to the JONAPWD president, creating opportunities for persons with disabilities to participate in sporting activities sends a positive message about equality and accessibility.

“Programmes like this prove that an inclusive society is achievable—one where everyone is empowered to participate, contribute and thrive,” he added.

Usman expressed appreciation to the Canadian Government for using sport as a platform to promote diversity, inclusion and mutual respect while celebrating the spirit of the FIFA World Cup.

He described the Abuja Diplomatic Soccer Tournament as an example of how football can unite people regardless of their background or physical ability.

The JONAPWD president also urged governments, corporate organisations and sports stakeholders to continue creating opportunities that encourage greater participation of persons with disabilities in sports and other sectors of national development.

One of the major highlights of the tournament was a Para Soccer exhibition match, which showcased the abilities of members of Nigeria’s para-football community and reinforced the message that sport remains a powerful tool for breaking barriers and promoting equal opportunities for everyone.
