‘Let The Coach Decide’ Ejiofor Backs Chelle — Says New Faces Must Be Given A Chance

Former Nigeria international Eric Ejiofor has thrown his support behind Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, insisting that the manager should be given full freedom to select his squad ahead of upcoming international friendlies.

With Nigeria preparing for the 2026 Unity Cup and high-profile matches against Portugal and Poland, Ejiofor believes this period offers a crucial opportunity to reshape the team.

“The coach should choose,” he said.

According to the former defender, Chelle must be allowed to assess players based on his own tactical vision and long-term plans, without unnecessary interference.

“It’s his responsibility,” he implied.

Ejiofor also welcomed reports that domestic league players could be included in the squad, describing it as a positive step toward broadening the talent pool.

“It’s a good opportunity,” he noted.

For him, giving home-based players a chance will not only strengthen competition but also help uncover hidden talents that could benefit the national team.

“We need new options,” he added.

He further expressed excitement about the possibility of new debutants, particularly Arthur Okonkwo, who recently switched allegiance to Nigeria.

“He can make an impact,” Ejiofor suggested.

As Nigeria looks to rebuild after recent disappointments, the upcoming fixtures are seen as a testing ground for new ideas and players.

For Ejiofor, the message is clear.

Trust the coach.

Give him the tools.

And allow him to build.

Because in football, progress begins with freedom to make decisions.
