Nigerian badminton star Anuoluwapo Opeyori has voiced strong opposition to plans by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to introduce synthetic shuttlecocks, insisting that they cannot match the quality of traditional feathered ones.
The proposal comes amid a global shortage of feather shuttlecocks, driven by factors including bird flu, rising demand, and supply chain changes in China.
However, Opeyori believes the alternative poses serious concerns for the sport.
“It can’t replace the original,” he said firmly.
According to the African champion, feathered shuttlecocks offer superior durability and more stable flight, key characteristics that define high-level badminton.
“They behave better,” he implied.
In contrast, Opeyori warned that synthetic shuttlecocks introduce inconsistencies that could affect performance, particularly in competitive matches.
“There are too many variables,” he noted.
One of his main concerns is how synthetic shuttles react to powerful shots.
He explained that smashes, a crucial part of the game, can easily deform synthetic shuttlecocks, reducing their reliability and altering gameplay.
“They don’t hold up,” he stressed.
For Opeyori, these issues make synthetic alternatives unsuitable for elite competitions, where precision and consistency are essential.
At the highest level, even minor differences in equipment can have a significant impact on performance.
“It changes the game,” he suggested.
While acknowledging the challenges behind the proposed change, Opeyori believes that maintaining the integrity of the sport should remain the priority.
His comments add to the growing debate within badminton about balancing innovation with tradition.
