Former Nigeria goalkeeper Akpan Bassey has welcomed the decision of Arthur Okonkwo to switch international allegiance to Nigeria, describing it as a move that will strengthen competition within the Super Eagles.
According to Bassey, Okonkwo’s arrival comes at a crucial time, adding depth to a goalkeeping department that has faced scrutiny in recent months.
“It will increase competition,” he said, highlighting the positive impact of having more quality options.
However, while he acknowledged the benefits of Okonkwo’s inclusion, Bassey was quick to stress that selection must remain based on merit.
“It’s not automatic,” he implied, warning against assumptions that club reputation alone should guarantee a place in the national team.
He emphasized that performances at club level do not always translate directly to international football, where the demands and expectations can be very different.
“You must earn it,” he noted.
Bassey also called for continued support for existing goalkeepers, including Maduka Okoye and Adebayo Adeleye, stressing that competition should not come at the expense of confidence.
In particular, he urged patience with current number one Stanley Nwabali, who has faced challenges recently.
“He still deserves backing,” Bassey said, emphasizing the importance of unity within the squad.
For the Super Eagles, the addition of Okonkwo signals a new phase of competition and depth in goal.
But as Bassey makes clear, the focus must remain on performance, fairness, and support.
Because in football, competition drives improvement.
And for Nigeria’s goalkeepers, the challenge is now greater than ever.
