Chairman of the National Sports Commission Shehu Dikko has revealed that Nigeria is already looking ahead to future hosting opportunities after missing out on the 2030 Commonwealth Games bid.
Despite the setback, Dikko insisted that the country’s ambition to host major sporting events remains firmly intact.
“We are not stopping,” he said, signaling a renewed push toward long-term goals.
According to him, Nigeria’s bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games was highly rated, providing encouragement that the country is capable of meeting international hosting standards.
“That gives us confidence,” he implied.
Building on that momentum, Dikko disclosed that discussions are already underway for a potential bid to host the 2034 edition of the Games.
But the vision does not stop there.
He also revealed that Nigeria is considering targeting other major continental competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations, as part of a broader strategy to enhance its sports infrastructure and global standing.
“We are thinking bigger,” he noted.
For Dikko, hosting such events is not just about prestige.
It is about development, improving facilities, creating opportunities, and positioning Nigeria as a key player in African sports.
“It will help us grow,” he suggested.
The plan reflects a shift in focus from short-term disappointment to long-term ambition.
Rather than dwelling on the missed opportunity, the NSC is looking to build on the experience and strengthen future bids.
As Nigeria continues to develop its sports sector, hosting major tournaments could play a crucial role in driving progress.
For fans and stakeholders, the prospect of bringing continental or global events to the country is an exciting one.
And as Dikko makes clear, the journey is far from over.
Because sometimes, missing out is just the beginning of something bigger.
