Sports247 reports that Gumel made the suggestion during the closing ceremony of the three-day advanced gender-inclusive governance course at the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) secretariat in Abuja.

The course, which ran from March 24th to 26th, brought together over 52 women, including former elite athletes and current board members of various sports federations, 47 of who were physically present, while five joined virtually.

Gumel said the initiative, which was organized by the NOC in conjunction with International Olympic Committee (IOC), aimed to end historical barriers in female leadership by providing participants with internationally recognised standards.

The NOC’s boss asserted that the future of Nigerian sports hinges on institutional reform driven by competent and inclusive leadership, while emphasizing that the goal was to increase effectiveness among women in boardrooms.

He added, “We want to ensure they are equipped with the specialised knowledge and strategic tools necessary to thrive in high-level decision-making roles. Many participants bring invaluable field experience, but they need more than that.

“That’s because formal training in modern administration is essential to improve compliance with international standards and ensure long-term growth. The course covered intricacies of governance reform, financial oversight and accountability.”

Sports247 gathered further that the three-day discourse centred on several critical pillars of modern sports management, including ethical leadership, safeguarding principles and integration of digital tools for policy implementation.
