The goalkeeper emerged as the standout figure of the encounter, producing a crucial penalty save during the match before going on to deny two spot-kicks in the shootout. His heroics ultimately sealed victory for Bethel Sporting in a fiercely contested clash.
Ikorodu City had earlier fought back into the game through Dagogo Ibifubara after Uche had already made a key save from the penalty spot in regulation time.
However, when it mattered most, the shot-stopper’s composure and preparation proved decisive.
Speaking after the game, Uche attributed his performance to faith, preparation, and teamwork.
“Truly, I give God the glory. We have put in the effort in training, and we did what we are known for. We are glad to have won,” he said.
The goalkeeper further revealed the work behind his penalty-saving ability.
“Saving penalties is my specialty. I have worked on it, watched several videos, and studied tactical approaches as a goalkeeper. I stayed focused till the end, and all thanks to God,” he added.
Currently on loan, Uche also highlighted the team’s strong mentality as a key factor in their success. He praised the squad’s fighting spirit and unity, describing FC Bethel Sporting as a side with resilience and character.
Looking ahead, the young goalkeeper expressed his ambitions beyond the local scene. “I am looking forward to Europe soon and representing the Super Eagles of Nigeria,” he stated, underlining his long-term goals.
Uche’s performances throughout the tournament were consistently impressive. Conceding just two goals in four matches—one from a penalty against Klassisch Football Academy and the other in the third-place playoff—he played a pivotal role in his team’s campaign, combining sharp reflexes with leadership at the back.
With focus, dedication, and hard work as his driving forces, Stephen Uche’s standout display in the Jagaban Cup not only secured silverware for his side but also marked him out as a goalkeeper with a promising future.
