Chelle To Clinch Second Trophy With Super Eagles, As Battle With Jordan Looms On Tuesday

Super Eagles’ coach, Eric Sekou Chelle is on the verge of clinching a second trophy since taking over the saddle of Nigeria’s men’s senior national team, as his squad looks good enough to win the four-nation competition in Antalya, Turkey.

Sports247 reports that victory over Jordan on Tuesday would seal an unassailable six points for the Eagles, who defeated Iran 2-1 on Friday in their first game of the competition.

While Chelle’s side cruised to victory with sizzlers from Moses Simon after just six minutes and Akor Adams in the 51st, Jordan gave up a two-goal lead, as they seemingly lost gas in a 2-2 draw with Costa Rica.

Should the Eagles beat the ‘hosts’ on the last day of the competition, it would be the second of such outings won by Chelle, who had the pleasure of leading Nigeria to clinch the 2025 Unity Cup with victory over Jamaica on May 31st in London.

Although he failed to qualify the Nigerian squad for the FIFA World Cup, Chelle appeared to redeem himself to an extent when he marshalled the Eagles into some delectable football en route to clinching bronze at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The team’s third-place finish at AFCON 2025 in Morocco buttressed their status as a top squad from the continent, such that many observers felt it is a letdown that the Eagles could not qualify for the first World Cup to be co-hosted by three countries.

Ironically, they are now on the verge of emerging tops ahead of two countries that will be heading for the Mundial in June, as Iran and Jordan have both picked tickets that Nigeria could not get, but they are bound to fall behind the Eagles on Tuesday.

A review of matches in the four-nation cup by Imhonlamhen of Afrik-Foot added in part, “Nigeria’s Super Eagles now have a clear advantage in the race to win the four-nation invitational tournament after results in both matches went their way.

“The Super Eagles’ 2-1 win over Iran, combined with Jordan’s 2-2 draw against Costa Rica, means Nigeria are in control going into the final round of games. If Nigeria beat Jordan on Tuesday, they will win the tournament.

“A draw could also be enough, if Iran defeat Costa Rica in the other match or both teams play out a draw. That leaves the Super Eagles knowing that their fate is firmly in their own hands.

“Jordan’s failure to hold on to victory against Costa Rica could prove costly. They led 2-0 late in the game and looked set to move level with Nigeria at the top. But a late comeback from Costa Rica changed the picture completely.”
