“I’m really impressed with the standard of the game here. The competition has set a record in terms of quality, especially with the calibre of sporting directors and the overall organisation,” he said.
The coach reserved special praise for the organisers, led by Gafar Liameed, Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association, noting that sustained investment in grassroots football is beginning to yield visible results.
“I will give kudos to the organisers. Encouraging young talents has been a long-term effort from his end, and it is clearly paying off,” Adeshina added.
One of the major talking points of the tournament has been its unique no-offside rule, a format that has significantly influenced the style of play. According to Adeshina, the rule has brought a different level of intensity and maturity to the competition.
“It makes the tournament more open and encourages hardworking players to express themselves fully and show their strength,” he explained.
He further emphasized that the Jagaban Cup serves as a crucial avenue for emerging players to showcase their abilities on a competitive stage.
“This is exactly what the platform is meant for — giving young talents the opportunity to show what they have.”
Following Matchday 1 results, Ikorodu City FC and 36 Lions FC have emerged as early favourites, having secured victories in their opening fixtures.
Adeshina concluded by reaffirming Lagos’ reputation as Nigeria’s football hub, stressing that continued administrative support and structured competitions will further strengthen the state’s position as a breeding ground for top talent.
