The late invitation of Trabzonspor of Turkey defender, Chibuike Godfrey Nwaiwu to the Super Eagles’ camp ahead of their international friendly against Iran left many Nigerian fans excited all through Thursday.
Sports247 reports that Nwaiwu has been in tremendous form, playing behind Super Eagles’ striker, Paul Ebere Onuachu this season in the Turkish Super Lig, with their efforts helping the club stage a shock push for the title.

With such stunning form to his name at club level, Nigerian fans felt it was a very fitting reward when Nwaiwu got a late call-up to the Eagles’ camp in place of injured Fulham of England centre back, Calvin Bassey.
Some of the fans even enthused that Nwaiwu could go on to cement his place in the Eagles’ mainframe in much the same way Brentford of England product, Benjamin Fredrick did when he got a similar late call-up for the 2025 Unity Cup.
A cross-section of views sampled by Sports247 on X showed unanimous agreement of Nigerians with the ‘emergency’ invitation that Nwaiwu received barely 72 hours to the Eagles’ clash with Iran in Antalya, Turkey.
E-Mario @ ejianrehE stated, “That’s a good replacement;” while Football Nations Corna projected, “Hope this is going to be another Fredrick;’ and Zahradeen @ zahradeenU7 added, “Big opportunity for Chibuike Nwaiwu.”
Sports247 gathered further that Nwaiwu began his senior career with Heartland of Owerrri in 2021, then moved to Enyimba of Aba on October 22nd, 2022, and helped them win the 2022/23 Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) title.
He then transferred to Wolfsberger AC of Austria in 2024, on a contract that was expected to run until 2027 but, just a year after helping them win the Austrian Cup, their first ever domestic trophy, he was off to Trabzonspor.
Nwaiwu’s move to the city of Trabzon has turned into a huge breakthrough for the former under-23 national team invitee, who was part of Nigeria’s ill-fated squad that failed to qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics.
