Super Eagles’ New Lemon Kit With Red Trimmings Draws Critical Reactions

Players of Nigeria’s men’s senior national team, Super Eagles on Wednesday stepped out for the first time in their new kit provided by American manufacturer, Nike, but critical reactions trailed the lemon green colour with red trimmings.

Sports247 gathered that many fans were taken aback with the kit’s light lemon shade, which is at variance with Nigeria’s dark green national colours, while red is not among the country’s long standing choices.

Further critical comments trailed the shorts, which are in black with red trimmings as well, thereby raising more eyebrows about Nike’s choice of colours for the Nigerian squad that has been known with deep green and white combinations.

Amazingly, the garb seen with the Eagles when they stepped out for their first training session in Antalya, Turkey, ahead of Friday’s international friendly against Iran, was in stark contrast with promotional images that had been posted online by Nike.

Graphics provided by Nike on Monday and shared by the media department of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) provided tops and shorts that appeared quite attractive in various combinations of green and white, for jerseys and training gear.

Incidentally, aside the controversial choice of colours by Nike, the kit worn by the players on Wednesday appeared flimsy and old fashioned, thereby leaving more fans raising objections across various social media groups and platforms.

A report by BusinessDay added in part, “Reaction from the Nigerian football community was swift and largely critical. @salmsyn wrote: ‘Na Gen Z dey design our recent Super Eagles jersey, all this unnecessary artwork no dey win trophies. It screams inter-house sport jersey.’

“@Cameraman Austin added: ‘These jerseys don’t look like they were made for the pitch—they look like they were made for fashion;’ while @abuagoody posted: ‘This should be a training kit, not the actual kit. Substandard, zero quality, terrible jersey.’”
