J200 Africa Championships: Ogunsakin Advances, Yakubu Crashes in Egypt

The third seed defeated Zimbabwe’s Bryne Edwin Dube 6-1, 6-0 on Monday to advance, underlining his status as one of the tournament favourites. Ogunsakin will now face Algeria’s Yacine Meghari in the second round as he continues his quest for the title.

A strong showing in Egypt could significantly boost Ogunsakin’s chances of securing a place in the main draw of a Junior Grand Slam, with victory at the tournament expected to strengthen his qualification hopes.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Ohunene Yakubu endured an early exit in the singles event after bowing out in the first round.

Despite the setback, Yakubu remains in contention in the doubles category.

She is set to partner Benin Republic’s Delphine Honfoga later on Tuesday, as the pair aim to secure a place in the second round of the doubles event.

Yakubu, currently the highest-ranked Nigerian female player on the ITF junior rankings, is also chasing qualification for a Junior Grand Slam, making her participation in the championship crucial to her ambitions.

The J200 Africa Regional Championship in Egypt continues this week, featuring top junior talents from across the continent competing for valuable ranking points and international opportunities.
